That’s Me, A Girly Girl

Filed under: What I Do When I'm Not Folding Laundry - Melissa @ 11:19 am

The other night, my husband’s computer went on the fritz.  He spent several hours before bedtime desperately trying to fix it.  There were computer parts and tools all over the living room floor.  Finally, he gave up and put everything away.  I was ready to go to bed because I’ve been sick with a cold lately.  Andrew had taken a really long nap (he’s been sick, too) earlier in the day, so I was pretty sure he wasn’t ready to sleep yet.  Being the kind and generous wife that I am, I offered to let him use my computer while I went to bed.  "You haven’t played City of Heroes at all today and it’s double XP weekend.  Go ahead and use my computer.  I’ll even let you change all my game settings so that it’s just the way you like it," I said…because I’m nice like that.

And how did he respond?  He took a long look over at my desk and then politely said, "No, thank you.  Have you seen your desk?"  I’m the first to admit that my desk is a little messy, but anything that anyone wants to keep gets put on my desk to wait for me to put it away, so it’s not entirely my fault.  And once a week, I do a major desk clean up complete with filing of important papers and shredding of old receipts and such.

"Go on.  I’ll put the papers on the table for now.  I know you’re not sleepy."

"No.  Besides, your computer is full of girly stuff."

"Girly stuff?"

"You download so many useless programs that it runs really slow.  And your homepage is your blog."

"Why is it girly that my homepage is my blog?  It’s my admin page."

"It’s just not practical.  My homepage is Google.  I use that all the time."

"I have the Google toolbar on my internet screens.  If you need it, you can use that."

"The Google toolbar is girly, too.  And you have it set to save all of your past searches so as your typing in the field, all sorts of suggestions pop up."

"Ooookay…"

So, apparently it’s very girly to set your home page to the page you look up most often.  And family pictures as your background wallpaper?  Also girly.  Other girly complaints?  My mouse is set to move too slow and there are crumbs in my keyboard.  I suppose, as difficult as it will be, I’ll just have to learn to live with such blatant femininity, because I like my desk and computer just the way they are.  So there.
