Where Has the Year Gone?

Filed under: Holidays - Melissa @ 9:47 am

Yesterday, we got our first Halloween catalog in the mail.  This has sparked much heated debate on who will wear what on that most sacred night of candy gathering.  Should we go with a family theme? Do we really need three Jango Fetts?  Does the Jango Fett costume even come in Aurora’s tiny little size?  We’ve talked of nothing else since I pulled the blasted thing out of the mail box.

All I can think is, "It is still August, right?  The beginning of August?"  But the catalog is here.  And we have a few weeks until next payday to contemplate the possibilites.  (The Oregon Department of Human Services only pays once a month.  I think they’re trying to test my budgeting abilities.)  We might even, *gasp*, wait for the Halloween displays to show up in our local Target.  And my mother did give the boys Spiderman costumes to play in while she was here, so maybe we’ll just use those and find something cute and girly for The Princess.

The big question is, do Mom and Dad want to dress up this year, too?  Dad, probably…Mom, not so much.  Dad will probably wear his standard cape/cloak thingy that he has worn any time he needed a costume be it halloween or Harry Potter book release parties.  I prefer to remain unencumbered so that I can chase down runaway little people.  Because excess amounts of sugar will make them more squirrelly than usual.

I don’t even know what the weather will be like for halloween out here.  In Idaho, it had already snowed a few times once halloween came around, so you could guarantee it would be COLD!  But Oregon, I don’t know.  I suspect it will also be cold, just not freezing.  And, AND, this means that the "Holiday Season" is right around the corner, too!  That means Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas presents, and New Year’s resolutions.  I’m not so sure that I’m ready for all of this yet!  I was kind of hoping to enjoy the rest of summer and then cry for two weeks straight as my first born goes off to kindergarten before even thinking about the holidays!  I don’t even know which boxes our holiday decorations are in!  AAAACK!  Curse you Lillian Vernon and your vast inventory of halloween costumes that will most likely sell out before I get a chance to order!  I shake my fist at you!

Stress much lately?

Update:  Upon closer inspection, the Jango Fett costumes are sixty bucks apiece!  So most likely, there will be no Jango Fetts this year as I am not in the habit of spending that much for the kids’ costumes.  I think the catalog will just "disappear" sometime in the next few days.  A shame, I know.  You may now resume your stressing over the coming holiday season.

  1. We got the same catalog. I thought their prices were too high. Especially on the Disney ones, which is probably what we will do this year. Disneydirect has some affordable costumes for girls. IT’s either there or Children’s Place for the baby less than 20 bucks is my kind of costume.

  2. They’re advertising Halloween costumes already?!?
Are they going to start the Christmas adverts next week, then???

Commercialization has now made my head hurt. Ow.
(Now I’m dying to know where in Oregon you are since I’m in the Valley. ^_^)
