But He’ll Always Be My Baby
As of today, there are only three weeks left until Ethan officially starts school. This is the first time I’ve had any of my little guys in the public school system and, though I know it’s only kindergarten and it’s only a half day, I’m having a bit of a hard time with it emotionally. I mean, this is my baby. The little one that I spent five days and four nights hovering over his bassinet in the NICU, touching him carefully so that I wouldn’t dislodge any of the myriad of tubes and wires that were poking out of his tiny little body. The tiny person who made me a mom. Yes, I’m crying right now. It’s not likely to stop any time soon.
I asked him today if he was excited to go to school. He answered with a resounding, "YES!!!" I asked him if he would still be my baby, even though he will be going to school just like a big kid. He said, "Of course!" He crawled into my lap and wrapped his arms around my neck. Then he said, "Mommy, when I get big, and am all grown up, and live in my own house, will I still be your baby?"
"Do you want to be my baby, even when you’re all grown up?"
"Oh, yes!"
"Then you don’t have anything to worry about. You will always by my baby!"
Then he squeezed me tight, got up, and went to go play computer games with his dad. And I sat there crying. Quietly, of course. No need to alarm the children.
Then Gideon piped up with, "I won’t be a baby! I’m a BIG BOY!" Perhaps Gideon was afraid I would turn into a stalker Mommy like the one in that children’s book "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch. Sweet book, except for the creepy parts.

OHHHHHHHHHHHh. that’s sweet.
…now, if I could just keep Gage from growing up….

I’ll love you forever…I’ll like you for always.
as long as I’m living…my baby you’ll be!
That book is one of my favorites. The end…when he holds his old mommy and rocks her….sniff sniff. It doesn’t get any better than that.

My husband still hasn’t forgiven me for reading that to him in the middle of Waldenbooks.
He was not prepared.
He’s not a real touchy-feely guy.
Oh yes, he did tear up.
Because I didn’t warn him.
And now I’m not allowed to read him children’s books in public.

I can’t get over that book… everytime I ever see a picture about that book it has this creeeeeeepy lady who can’t let go sneaking into her boys house… I love my family, I love my Mother, but if she snuck into my house at night to rock me I think we’d have to get better locks. I’m more evil than Alanna’s Husband I think.
