Blogger, Thou Vexest Me

Filed under: What I Do When I'm Not Folding Laundry - Melissa @ 7:08 pm

I read Wordgirl’s post yesterday about some changes that Blogger has made to their commenting system.  She pretty much says it all.  Basically, if you ain’t down wit’ Blogger, you ain’t nobody, sucka!  Awhile back I had set up a Blogger account and they had an option to link it to your own blog.  Which was nice.  Very nice.  Then they removed that option.  No biggie.  Though I was a little put out that I could no longer comment on those blogs where the people chose not to allow anyone but Blogger people to comment.  I’m talking to you, Mary and Erinemoticon  But now I can only comment on a Blogger account with my Blogger info or as… *booming voice* ANONYMOUS *booming voice*, which is normally reserved for spammers and haters.  I? Am neither.  If I use my Blogger info, it will send someone to a blank blog if they click on my link.  I love my friends.  I love to comment on the goings on in their lives and minds.  That doesn’t mean I don’t like whoring my blog out to new readers through their comments!  *sigh*  So to all you Blogger-philes out there, show those of us on the outside a little love and see about lodging a complaint.  You know, rock the boat a bit.  I’ll still be by.  Reading.  Commenting.  ‘Cause I love ya.  I’ll just have to figure out another way to guide new people in.

All my love,

Proof That He Is In Fact My Son

Filed under: KidSpeak - Melissa @ 3:40 pm

This morning, Gideon brought me his jeans to put on him that he had apparently rescued from the dirty clothes pile.  "Oh, Sweetie, these smell moldy.  Go put them in the laundry bin and I’ll find you a clean pair of pants to wear today."

Gideon dutifully put the jeans in with the other dirties and I grabbed a pair of sweat pants out of his closet.  He stood next to me and slipped his legs in.  As I pulled up his pants he exclaimed, "Oh Mommy!  These are soooooo sooooooft!  I liiiiike soooooft on my legs!"

"They’re called sweat pants.  They’re nice to wear on cold rainy days like today."

"Ooooooh.  Sweat pants.  Niiiiiiiiiice.  Waaaarm.  Soooooooft."

Update:  I have spent a good portion of my day pulling Gideon’s hands out of his pants while he felt around and chanted, "Niiiiiice.  Waaaaaarm.  Sooooooft." with his eyes all glazed over.  I think he likes sweat pants a little too much.  You’d think the boy had never worn sweats before!

Tryptophan Returns!

Beware invitations to go to someone’s house for dinner the Sunday after Thanksgiving…they may serve TURKEY!

Aurora fell asleep in Andrew’s lap about a half hour after we got home…

…we saw Ethan as we carried her to her room…

…and we had to be careful not to step on Gideon on our way up the stairs!

I thought they were playing a little too quietly!

He Just Read My Mind

We went to Applebee’s for lunch today.  Ethan looked around for a bit examining all of the decorations on the walls.  Then he looked at me and said, "Why are the walls at this restaurant always so messy?"

Oh, You Must’ve Been a Beautiful Baby!

Just look at that beautiful face!

She’s already 10 weeks old…how on earth does time fly by so very fast?

Maybe She Would Like Some Cheese With That Whine

Aurora got her flu shot on November 13th.  She is still walking around, grabbing her thigh, and saying, "Booboo!  Shot!"  I know she’s just two years old, but when will it no longer be bad parenting to tell her to get over it already?

When Tryptophan Attacks!

Here’s a little holiday safety tip you might be unaware of.  Make sure you use the potty before eating your turkey dinner.

The funniest part was when I tried to wake him up.  I sat him up and poked and prodded him for a few minutes while he whined and rubbed his eyes.  I finally got him awake enough to flush the toilet, put his pants back on, and get up on the stool to wash his hands.  He swayed precariously on the top step while he got his hands wet.  On his first attempt to get soap, he kept trying to push the cold water tap while I stood next to him saying, "That’s not the soap, Gideon.  The soap’s right next to you.  That’s not the soap, Gideon.  Gideon, that’s not the soap." before finally grabbing his hands and putting the soap on them myself.  He went to rinse and started hopping up and down and crying.  When I asked what the matter was, it became evident that the poor boy had fallen asleep before he had been able to go potty!  Apparently tryptophan worked it’s sleepy-time magic on my boy in a big way!

The Food…Oh, the Foooood!

Filed under: Holidays - Melissa @ 4:07 pm

Thanksgiving dinner went off fairly smoothly.  I managed to turn the turkey’s innards into outards with minimal wretching and only a few deep breathing exercises, so I’m calling it a success.

Dinner ended up happening a bit later than planned, but that was not my fault.  It was that darn NBC’s fault for not broadcasting the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade over the internet!  I have never missed the parade.  Never.  I spent forever trying to find a way to watch it over the internet because we still don’t have a television.  Do you know how awkward it feels to listen to Christmas music when you haven’t been able to watch Santa in the parade?  I mean, how will he know I’ve been a good girl this year if I don’t shout it excitedly at the television set?  Anyway, I took a bit longer getting the cooking started than I should have.  *sigh*

But it’s all good, because the food was every bit as delicious as I knew it would be!

Behold!  The Feast!

Behold!  The Feast from another angle!  Ignore the jar of gravy and the can shaped cranberry sauce!

Here is our turkey before we removed its tin foil hat.  It either keeps the white meat from overcooking, or it keeps aliens from controlling the turkey’s brain wave patterns.

Just look at that golden brown, crispy perfection!

And this is my husband as he discovered that there was still another bag of giblets yet to be removed.  Did you know they make the bags oven safe now?

So that was our thanksgiving.  We had pumpkin pie and angel food cake for dessert and watched Flight of the Navigator.  It was a great day, except for the whole missing the parade thing.  I’m gonna feel really silly telling the mall Santa that I’ve been good now, but what are you gonna do?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Filed under: Holidays - Melissa @ 2:18 am

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Thanksgiving today.  I’ll be watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, listening to Christmas music, and (hopefully) cooking up the tenderest, juiciest turkey ever eaten on this green earth!  This year, the Davenport clan will be sitting down to mashed sweet potatoes, carrots, deviled eggs, cranberry sauce, olives, mashed potatoes, stuffing, turkey, egg nog, and for desert, pumpkin pie and angel food cake.  Deeeelicious!

So let’s see…what am I thankful for this year?  I’m thankful that our transition from a family of five to a family of six seems to be going smoothly so far.  I’m thankful for all the friends I’ve made as a result of this blog.  (Just so you know, even though I’ve never me you in person, I consider you all my Real Life friends.)  I’m thankful that my family is healthy and that my children are curious.  I’m thankful for libraries and the internet.  I’m thankful for people who have wonderful music playing in their heads and who take the time to write it down and share it with those of us who can’t even fathom that talent.  I’m thankful for parades and for food and for chances for family members to gather together and endure each other’s company.  I’m thankful for opportunity and knowledge.  Most of all, I’m thankful for the fantastic man who married me and who puts up with my imperfections, few though they may be!

Have a great time today and let me know some of the things you’re thankful for.  Happy Thanksgiving!
